Range Rover Velar plug-in hybrid: specs and details
Land Rover has launched a plug-in hybrid 'P400e' version of its stylish Range Rover Velar SUV. It joins the long-established Range Rover PHEV and Range Rover Sport PHEV – as well as the more recently revealed Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover Defender and Land Rover Discovery Sport plug-in hybrids – in the British brand's electrified line-up.
In the Velar, the now-familiar P400e drivetrain returns up to 33 miles of electric range and CO2 emissions of 49g/km – sufficient for the all-important low company-car tax rating expected of all plug-in hybrids. The setup consists of a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine making 296bhp, coupled to a 141bhp electric motor and eight-speed automatic gearbox. In the Velar, that power output translates to a 5.4-second 0-62mph time.
The car's 17.1kWh battery holds sufficient charge for that previously mentioned 33-mile electric range and takes 30 minutes to charge up to 80% capacity from a fast charging point, or just over an hour from a standard 7kW home wallbox. Fuel economy recorded in official testing is 130.2mpg and there are electric-only, hybrid and charge-saving driving modes to choose from.
The addition of hybrid power does nothing to diminish the Velar's considerable off-road ability; the P400e version comes with the full suite of technology to enable it to tackle adverse terrain, including all-wheel drive, hill-descent control, a low-traction launch-control system, all-terrain progress control, Land Rover's Terrain Response 2 system (which automatically sets up the car to deal with conditions ranging from grass to gravel, snow, mud, ruts and sand), as well as both 3D surround and 'ground view' cameras.
In tandem with the plug-in hybrid joining the line-up, there has also been a series of range-wide updates to the Velar as a whole, including new exterior colour options, Land Rover's latest 'Pivi' and 'Pivi Pro' in-car infotainment systems, an active road-noise cancellation system, a new cabin air filtration system and the addition of mild-hybrid technology to the car's six-cylinder petrol and diesel and four-cylinder diesel engine options.
